The lights are on the girls who stand on stage. Lavishly dressed, with the most grand gowns and exquisite tiaras resting on top of their elaborately styled hair. They look flawless, as they wait for the judges to announce the winner. A shout of cheers goes up as one of the girls win. The other contestants smile, but deep inside, they feel insecure and imperfect. Hi there! Today's post will be about beauty pageants. I was just thinking about this the other day, when the Miss Universe 2015 mishap happened, you can see what happened in the video below, if you haven't already heard about it. Basically what happened is that the host announced that Miss Columbia was the winner, and she was crowned and given the bouquet. After that the host, Steve Harvey returns and says that he made a mistake, it turns out that Miss Philippines was actually the winner. So it got me thinking, and I realized the many negative sides of beauty pageants. That's why I will be telling you why I do not like beauty pageants. (After this short joke to amuse you.) Let's start with money and prizes. To win a sensible beauty pageant, you will need some really nice clothes, a professional hair dresser, a qualified makeup artist, the list goes on. I'm not saying that this is all that matters, but do you really think you would win if you look like this? Because believe it or not, beauty matters in a beauty pageant! So imagine all the money that would cost. Probably thousands. If you win, you do get a reasonable prize, but probably not as much as how much you spent. If you don't win, that congratulations, because you'll probably be broke.
Another reason I don't like beauty pageants is because it makes people feel insecure and set limits, expectations for themselves. Not everyone does this, but a lot of people do. For example, if you see a stunningly gorgeous girl in a beauty pageant, who is very very thin, has flawless hair and skin and is generally really pretty, you might feel bad that you're not as good as them, or you might try and become like them, This leads to depression, anorexia, and probably even worse things. You can't ignore the fact that beauty pageants are literally shows that judge people on how pretty they look. they make people want to be only beautiful on the outside, and they forget about beauty on the inside, like kindness, responsibility, honesty. There are lots of beauty pageants for girls who are barely toddlers. This just encourages them to become beauty-obsessed barbie dolls as they grow up. I know that beauty pageant standards have changed. They used to be about putting on a fancy dress, being thin, painting a fake smile on your face and strutting on stage. But now beauty pageants award contestants who are pretty, quick witted and have good qualities. This said, I still think that beauty pageants judge girls. And you know how everyone says don't judge people? This is basically what they're doing. Competitions like The Voice, Dance Fever, etc. award people with talent, and I think that should be encouraged. Beauty is not exactly a talent. My conclusion is that people don't need competitions and shows and judges to tell them they're pretty, smart or nice. We have friends for that. Every person in the world should know that they are beautiful, it doesn't matter if they don't how it on the outside. Remember, everyone is beautiful. If you have a different opinion, I totally respect that. Let's finish this post on a good note, anyway.
