It's finally March! To be honest, March actually started 5 days ago, but let's not dwell on that. Let's see if I've accomplished all of my goals this month: (I stopped updating it after a while) Write more: I think I should write more poems and short stories this month. Yes. Definitely. Have a blogging schedule: Maybe set up a particular time to blog every other day or so. Well, not really. I haven't followed this one. :( Read up to 9 books or more: I haven't been reading much lately, so I'll download e-books and get books from the library. I read about 8 books. :( So close Practice my typing skills: I want to improve the speed of my typing because I'm not that quick with my fingers. I improved my typing speed from 48 to 54! Do something useful over Spring Break: I feel like I say this every year but I never get around to doing something productive over the 2 week holiday. Stop losing things: Self-explanatory Read 8 NEW books: I keep re-reading books and I need to get introduced to new content Make my posts more amusing: You know, with gifs and images and etc. So that's all for March, not much. (I know I've been neglecting my blog a bit): February 29th. Sound unfamilar? It is, because Feb 29th only comes once every four years, and even though you already knew that, ehre are some Leap Year Day facts that I'm pretty sure you don't know.
WHo knew that Feb 29th is a day for trickery? When Christopher Columbus wanted to trick Jamaicans. It was a leap day on Feb 29th 1504 and the chefs and stopped cooking food for Columbus's crew. So Coulmbus said that God would paint the moon red as a punishment. During the eclipse the chefs finally gave in and started providing food for the crew, and by then the eclipse ended. Greek people believe that February 29th is an unlucky day to get married. In Ireland, 29 February is called Bachelor's Day, when women are allowed to propose to men. Queen Margaret of Scotland began the tradition in 1288. If a man refused the proposal, he would be fined a kiss, a silk dress or 12 pairs of gloves. On February 29, 2008, Michelle Birnbaum gave birth to a daughter. The funny thing is, Michelle was also born on a leap day, Feb 29 1980. The chances of this are about two million to one. Sir James Milne Wilson was bor n on a leap day and died on a leap day. Coincedince? I think not. In the 18th century, Sweden was going to change their calendar format and eliminated Leap Year for 40 years. The switch ended up not happening, forcing them to add February 30 to get back on track. Admit it. Nobody's perfect, it is literally impossible. That's why you need to stop putting yourself down and telling yourself you're not good enough. You can't deny that you've said or thought at least one of these things before.
1. "Ugh, why did I say that? It was so stupid." Everyone regrets things they've said. Whether it's a wrong answer or a stuttered reply, you have to admit that you've said stupid things before. The best thing to do is to not think about it. Don't keep telling yourself that what you said was dumb. Try to forget about it and it will be fine. 2. "I just did a embarrassing thing. Now I'm going to lock myself up in a room and weep for days." This might have been an exaggeration, but a lot of people feel like this after they've done something embarrassing. From tripping and falling flat on your face to spilling food all over your face in a public place, all of us gone through something like this and dwelled on it for days. Even though you think that you'll never be able to live it down, everyone would have forgotten it in a week. Think about, can you remember a really embarrassing moment that happened to someone else? 3. "I look so ugly compared to her/him." No. Never say you're ugly. Other people might think that you're ugly, but YOU know that you're beautiful. And even if you're convinced you look absolutely gruesome (which you aren't), you're beautiful on the inside and you know that. You might be sick of people telling you you're beautiful on the inside, but trust me, and yourself, you are. You're at school, just minding your own business, when someone comes up to you. They laugh and make an insulting remark about you. How do you react? 1. DON'T lose your temper If someone insults you, just remember to never get overly angry. The last thing you want to do is attack them or physically hurt them. Keep cool, take a deep breath, and don't punch the person. Chances are, they're only trying to provoke you, and maybe even trying to get you into trouble. 2. Ignore them
This might work sometimes. Just roll your eyes and walk away. When someone insults you, they are probably only trying to annoy you, and if you act like you don't care, they will be discouraged. 3. Laugh it off or agree Sometimes, it's okay to just go along with it. Someone call you shorty? Laugh with them and agree. Don't be offended and don't take it as an insult and the person will most likely stop. 4. Think of a good comeback Don't let them get the last laugh. Reply with a witty comment and walk away. For example, if someone calls you fat, you could reply with 'Yeah, at least I'm not stuck with an ugly face like you.' 5. Know when they are taking it too far Making rude remarks is a part of daily life. There will always be at least one person that doesn't like you, and you can't help that. However, when someone starts commenting on your religion, race, or gender, that crosses the line. Ever start writing something but don't know how to describe it? Or do you have an idea and just need a little creativity to get your ideas flowing? Try Descriptionari, a free website with over 11,000 quotes and descriptions. This website lets you search for a particular topic, for example, 'Forest'. Then, you can see descriptions of that word or phrase that other people have written. These descriptions are usually very good and are great to spark your imagination. There are hundreds of quotes too. The best part is, it's all free. Why I Like It: Descriptionari has high-quality descriptions, and there are no words to express how creative they are. They are written by people fro all around the world. If you want, you can alos create an account. When you make an account, you get to Like your favourite quotes and even write your own.
What Could Be Better: I think there should be a wider range of topics for you to explore, and most things I searched for didn't have a proper result. I suppose the reason for this is that not many people know about descriptionari.com. Try it now! We see stereotypes everyday. And the funny thing is, not in real life, but in movies, shows, and other things like that. Some have become so popular that you don't even recognize them as stereotypes. Here are a few. Blonde girls are always dumb and ditzy. People with glasses are nerdy and smart. If you're good at school then you have no social life. If you're British, that means you are posh and you drink tea. If a person is rich, they're obviously spoilt. A girl with short hair is a tomboy and likes sports. If I wear black, then I'm a goth or emo. All Asians are good at math. If you wear a turban, then you are a terrorist. Athletes are stupid and don't do well in school. All girls love pink and bows. All boys like blue and sports. You have to admit that you've seen at least one of these before, or maybe even agreed to one of them. Just because one person or a few people you know are like this, then it doesn't mean that everyone is. To be smart, you don't have to wear weird clothes and ties and glasses. To be athletic, you don't have to always wear sporty clothes and not be interested in anything else. So next time you use a stereotype, STOP, and understand why it's wrong. And when you hear someone using a stereotype, TELL THEM.
Time. A lot have things have happened since the beginning of time. Too many to really understand. That's why, we can just compress all the history of the Earth in 24 hours to understand it easier. To begin with, it starts early in the morning, around 4 AM. Small organisms with only one cell are formed. It's funny to think that these eventually developed into modern-day humans. Then, at 1 PM, these cells start to join, and create more organisms with internal organs. At 6:30, these multi-cell things start to develop. Now, at nearly 8:30, sea plants start to appear. At ten to 9, (8:50) we start to see a few known sea creatures come to existence. Jellyfish, krill, and other sea creatures appear, creating diversity on Earth. More than an hour later, plants start to grow on land. Twenty five minutes later, we start to see forests and winged insects on Earth. A few reptiles appear, and even dinosaurs, but come 11:45 and all these dinosaurs are wiped out. That's when we see the first signs of mammals. Apes evolve from the monkeys, and form highly diverse ecosystems. At 11:48, with only a couple of minutes till the end of the day, humans emerge, and all human history, from the Ancient Egyptians to the Romans to the World Wars takes only few seconds. And that's the history of Earth in a day.
Here's a little horror story I made. It's not that scary, nothing that'll give you nightmares.
The rain pounded the windows as I twisted and turned in bed. The sound was almost deafening, the rumbles of thunder and the cracks of lightning. There was no way I could fall asleep with all that noise. I was staying in a cozy little farmhouse, but at this moment, it wasn't very welcoming. Unable to bear the noise, I clambered out of bed and peered out the window dolefully. There was another flash of lightning, and that's when I saw her. Greasy black tresses streamed down her back, giving the impression that it was wet. Her eyes were lifeless and grey, outlined thickly in black. Mascara dripped down her pale cheeks and she was dressed in a ghostly nightgown. I couldn't help but shriek. My friend ran to my room immediately. An expression of both bewilderment and terror was etched on her face, since she was wondering what the reason for the scream was. I pointed at the window frantically. "There! Look!" She looked out the window and sighed, "What? I don't see anything." I looked outside. She was right, the strange girl had disappeared. "But... but... there... she... she was standing right here! I swear! She... there... it was a girl!" I stammered. My friend rolled her eyes. "You're just sleepy. Let's both go get some sleep. She turned around to leave when another scream escaped my lips. My friend swivelled around just in time to see the mysterious girl. "Probably just some old beggar woman trying to scare us. It's pathetic. I'm going back to bed. " She scowled, and left the room. I shook my head and climbed back into bed, shivering. I woke up the next day to the sound of a rooster crowing. I blinked and looked around. I expected my friend to be awake, since she was a morning person, but I could here no sounds. I got out out of bed and padded out of the room. I found my way to the living room and stopped abruptly. My friend lay on the ground in a pool of blood, eyes wide open with fear. I lowered my ear to her, and realised that she wasn't breathing. She was dead. I looked around, my throat dry with panic and saw a message scrawled on the wooden floor in blood; She insulted the wrong person. She had to pay. So that's it! Do you think you could continue the story? Write about who the mystery killer is, the girl at the window? Write what happens next in the story? The Earth is massive. There are people dying every second. There are people being born every second. There is so much pollution happening right now, as you read this. Here are two websites that will help you understand. Breathing EARTHOkay, so this is an outdated website and is based on statistics from 2010, but the graphics and visuals of this site and the way it illustrates the Earth in a simple way is magnificent, so i thought you should see it. http://www.breathingearth.net/ This is how the page looks. Awesome, right? Not to mention that this website has the best quotes ever! WORLD-O-METERShttp://www.worldometers.info/world-population/ Now, if you want real time stats, this an awesome site and can keep you interested for a long time. For example, one delightful feature of this is all people on the world on one page. You have to scroll vertically and horizontally to see all of them. All on this page, one by one. One of those tiny figures there might be you!
That's all I have today :) Here's a quote by me. |
